Reviving a Victorian Gothic Masterpiece
Historical Context:
In the 19th-century Gothic Revival movement, the pelican was a profound symbol of self-sacrifice, charity, and civic devotion. Based on a medieval myth that a mother pelican would pierce her own breast to feed her starving young with her blood, this motif (known as the “Pelican in her Piety”) was frequently chosen for Victorian civic buildings to represent the spirit of nurture and service to the community.
The Restoration Work:
• Symbolic Reconstruction: I hand-carved the replacement pelican heads directly into the column capitals, restoring the visual
“narrative” that had been lost to over a century of weathering and erosion.
